Barcelona are keen to bring Javier Mascherano back to the club in a coaching capacity at their famed youth academy La Masia, according to reports. Mascherano played for Barcelona for eight years between 2010-2018, winning two Champions League trophies and five LaLiga titles during an illustrious period in Catalunya.
Since retiring in 2020, the 37-year-old has pursued a coaching career and is currently the manager for the Argentina Under-20 side - yet a move back to Barcelona could be in the pipeline soon. A report in Spanish outlet SPORT states that Barca president Joan Laporta is keen to bring back prestigious former players in different capacities, whether it be in coaching or executive positions.
Ex-captain Xavi is now the first-team head coach and maintains a good relationship with Mascherano from their time playing together. Laporta is keen to bring back Mascherano - whether it be now or in 12 months time - to work with the grassroots and the youngest players at the club, according to the report.
The 37-year-old has pursued a coaching career and is the manager for Argentina Under-20s. Barca's famed La Masia academy has produced world stars, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique all emerging from the youth system.
Mascherano will need to have a suitable role at the academy in order to leave his job in South America, with progressing his coaching career in his homeland an option too. There was speculation last year that another ex-player, former Mexican international Rafael Marquez, would join as a coach but Mascherano is said to be a more appealing option. The reports have not been confirmed yet but there is a huge chance that Mascherano could be taking the offer.
